Balance

Do you or someone you know have a fear of falling while outside or even in your home? Balance plays an important part in being able to maintain independence as a person ages. Balance is comprised of 3 systems that work together to send signals to the body. The systems are somatosensory (joints and muscles), vestibular (inner ear), and visual. When one or more of these systems are affected, a person may lose their balance and cause injuries such as broken arm, wrist, pelvis or ankle.

A physical therapist is able to assess which systems are not functioning properly with simple tests performed in the clinic; no fancy equipment is needed. Based on the results of the testing a personalized program can be established to meet your needs and address the 3 systems for your balance. The treatments will work on the deficient areas and return you to safe activities, decreasing your risk of falls and injury.
